Suicide claims more lives than war, murder, and natural disasters combined.

General

  • In 2014 (latest available data), there were 42,773 reported suicide deaths.
  • Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for adults between the ages of 15 and 64 years in the United States.
  • Currently, suicide is the 10th leading cause of death in the United States.
  • A person dies by suicide about every 12.3 minutes in the United States.
  • Every day, approximately 117 Americans take their own life.
  • Ninety percent of all people who die by suicide have a diagnosable psychiatric disorder at the time of their death.
  • There are 3.5 male suicides for every female suicide, but three times as many females as males attempt suicide.
  • 494,169 people visited a hospital for injuries due to self-harm behavior, suggesting that approximately 12 people harm themselves (not necessarily intending to take their lives) for every reported death by suicide.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention puts on a walk every year that reaises awareness for Suicide and it is called the Out of the Darkness Walk. Truxtun Psychiatric Medical Group and our sister offices, Psychiatric Wellness Center and Brand New Day, all join in to support this cause and this marks our third year!

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s mission is to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide.

To fully achieve its mission, AFSP engages in the following Five Core Strategies:

  • Fund scientific research
  • Offer educational programs for professionals
  • Educate the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
  • Promote policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
  • Provide programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involve them in the work of the Foundation

As the core of the Out of the Darkness Walks, the Community Walks are proof that when people work together, they can make big changes in our world. Taking place in hundreds of cities each fall, these walks raise awareness for our important cause as they raise the resources needed to carry out AFSP’s mission.

Net proceeds from the Out of the Darkness Walks benefit the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention. AFSP uses the funds to:

  • Fund Research for Suicide Prevention
  • Create and Distribute Education Programs
  • Advocate for Public Policy
  • Support Survivors of Suicide Loss
  • Offer educational programs for professionals
  • Educate the public about mood disorders and suicide prevention
  • Promote policies and legislation that impact suicide and prevention
  • Provide programs and resources for survivors of suicide loss and people at risk, and involve them in the work of the Foundation.

Join us this year, October 26th at Riverwalk Park for the Out of the Darkness Walk 2019!
